Key Events in Ukraine

  • Ukraine celebrated the Day of the National Flag. At the celebration ceremony President Poroshenko called on all political forces to unite.
  • Prime Minister Yatsenyuk said that the roads in Ukraine will be renovated thank to the excise tax on imported petroleum products after the adoption of a government bill on creation of the road fund. According to the Minister of Infrastructure Pyvovarsky, this year UAH 1.7 billion (only $74 million) was spent for road repairs, which makes only 10% of the required amount only for "patching" repair.

Ukraine at War

  • Militants continue the shellings of the Ukrainian army positions and settlements in the Donbass using heavy artillery and MLRS. Surroundings of Donetsk and Mariupol direction are remaining the flash points. According to the official reports, one Ukrainian soldier was killed and four were wounded during the day.
    Russia continues to move troops and heavy equipment to the Donbass. According to reports from the region, on August 23 three motor convoys passed Rovenki.
    Intelligence and local observers reported that the militants units were moved to the front line and are operational ready. A sharp escalation of the conflict is possible in the nearest time.

Ukraine and the World

  • Polish President Duda’s first trip abroad was to Estonia. The Presidents of two contries stated that security in the region, which is considered by Russia a vulnerable area, could be ensured by changing the NATO policy, including deployment of new military bases of the Alliance in the Eastern Europe.
  • Estonia proposed to establish an international tribunal to investigate the crimes of communism. The idea was already supported by seven countries -  former Soviet republics and Warsaw Pact states.

The Trends


  • Europe cannot cope with the stream of refugees from the Middle East and Africa, most of which are Muslims, that significantly  increased recently. According to experts, the intensification of illegal migration to Europe can be initiated by Muslim extremists and Putin to divert the EU attention from other international issues, in particular the Russian aggression in Ukraine.
