Key Events In Ukraine

  • President Poroshenko held a meeting on the fight against contraband in Ukraine, which includes also the occupied territory of Donbass, and initiated a bill on destruction of the excise goods in place of detention  and on confiscation of vehicles.
  • The court, despite the overwhelming evidence presented by the investigation, acquitted the former rector of the Tax Academy Melnik, who was accused of corruption and bribery. The Prosecutor's Office announced that they will appeal this case. Minister of Justice Petrenko says that acquittal of the bribe-taker is an evidence of totally corrupt judicial system.
  • The Deputy Chief of Investigation Department of the Prosecutor General's Office, who was arrested after the search of his office, was released on  bail.
  • The National Bank slightly strengthened the hryvnia exchange rate after three days of decline: 21.85 UAH/USD (-0.12 UAH), 24.15 UAH/EUR (-0,07 UAH), 3.83 UAH/RUR 10 (-0.01 UAH).

Ukraine at War

  • The situation in the Donbass remains tense but stable , the shellings of the Ukrainian positions in the area of Donetsk, Gorlivka, Mariupol, Schastye, Stanitsa Luhanska, along  the Donetsk-Mariupol highway and "Bahmutka" route in the Luhansk region continued. According to the official reports, during the previous day one Ukrainian soldier was wounded .
  • Ukrainian authorities sent to Russia  a proposal to change the method of delivery of humanitarian aid, which is currently delivered to the occupied territories by "convoys". It is offered to organize a supply by rail through the Kharkiv region under both Ukrainian customs control and supervision of international humanitarian organizations. Russian party did not give any response so far, but the next "convoy" invaded the territory of Ukraine again.
  • Military-civilian administrations of Donetsk and Lugansk regions want to create so-called "logistic centers" (wholesale and retail markets) along the demarcation line to reduce the shuttle traffic through the checkpoints and facilitate the delivery of non-excise goods and medicines to the occupied territories.

Ukraine and the World

  • Secretary General of the Council of Europe Jagland  considers that Ukraine should record the special status of the occupied part of the Donbass in the Constitution of Ukraine to fully implement the Minsk agreements.
  • Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Churkin called the attempts to create an international tribunal to investigate the accident with the aircraft MH-17 flight, shot down over the Donbass, futile.
  • Ukraine's Foreign Ministry protested against the new charges, brought up by  Russian investigation against Ukrainian deputy Savchenko.
  • US Secretary of State Kerry reported on no breakthrough in the negotiations over Iran's nuclear program. He said that decisions must be taken quickly for the US Congress to adopt timely decisions on lifting the embargo. Otherwise, according to him, the US is ready to withdraw from the negotiation process. However, the Iran representatives are more optimistic and claim that negotiations are constructive, because otherwise they would not participate in them.
  • The US is considering all applications of the Ukrainian government to provide weapons, but at the moment, before the adoption of the program by President Obama, it provides only non-lethal military aid.
  • The United States successfully tested a new nuclear bomb, is it the first of three tests scheduled for this year. According to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission representative, this bomb is an essential component of the nuclear deterrence.
  • The European Parliament received the Greek proposals to resolve the financial crisis. German Chancellor Merkel once again stressed that the country's debts will not be written off. Greek Prime Minister Tsipras asked from Europe 12 billion euros for two years, in return his government promises to raise the corporate tax and the VAT for restaurants and hotels. President of the European Central Bank Draghi doubts that it is possible to save Greece from bankruptcy this time.

The Trends


  • Experts and foreign observers believe that the Ukrainian judicial system is not fulfilling its functions and does not provide a real justice, being therefore one of the main obstacles to reforms, and a "glue" that binds all existing corrupt schemes.
